Arthropoda

Top > Biology > Biota > Fauna > Arthropoda

Arthropods (Arthropoda) have segmented bodies which are protected by a hard outer skeleton (exoskeleton) plus attached appendages for feeding, sensory reception, defense, and locomotion. They can be separated into crustaceans (Crustacea), insects (Hexapoda), millipedes (Myriapoda) and spiders (Chelicerata). We provide comprehensive descriptions including anatomy, physiology, behavior, distribution, reproduction and life cycle, habitat, and other biological or ecological aspects of arthropods.

Many arthropods have adopted the parasitic way of life. Depending on your definition of parasitism, something between 15 and 50% of insect species are either parasitic or have parasitic stages in their life cycle. Some groups of parasitic arthropods are more economically important than others.
