A widespread, tropical, monoecious palm and one of the most economically important palms. Coconuts tolerate salty, sandy soils and thrive in the lowland tropics, usually but not necessarily, on the seacoast.

Identification: Upperside of male is black; forewing with a gray stigma. Upperside of female is a paler brownish black with a pale diffuse patch on the forewing. Underside of both sexes is mahogany red and black. Life history: Not reported.

Coconut requires an equatorial climate with high humidity. The ideal mean annual temperature is 27ºC with 5-7º diurnal variation. The palm does not withstand prolonged spells of extreme variations. A well-distributed rainfall of 1300-2300 mm per annum is preferred.
