I am not a master gardener and I have only grown Brussels sprouts once and that was near Seattle, Washington. The experience was an interesting one for me, so I almost hate to spoil it for you.
. This vegetable probably originated as a mutation in wild or primitive Mediterranean cabbages, and was first noted under cultivation in the Belgian city of Brussels. The edible portion of the plant is the floral buds, which grow axially along the stem.
These cool-season crops are somewhat hardy and will tolerate various degrees of frost. They grow best in the fall when the weather turns from warm to cool. Recommended varieties, soil preparation, fertilization and pest control are included. (PDF Format Only)
Brussels Sprouts are a member of the Cruciferous family of vegetables, and are related to cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and kale. The name comes from the fact that they were first cultivated widely during the Middle Ages in Belgium.

Brussels sprouts get their name from having been grown 400 years ago in the vicinity of Brussels, Belgium. As a commercial crop, it is produced in the United States, primarily in California and New York. Sprouts are a favorite crop in the British Isles, where they are widely grown.
