Charentais is a bright orange fleshed melon with sugary flavor, and fragrant flesh. It is popular both as a dessert and breakfast melon. It is available year round and is grown in Europe and in California. It has a smooth skin and is deeply ribbed. It is a good keeper if kept in a dry dark place.
An outbreak of Salmonella poona has been associated with cantaloupe from two Mexican companies sold under the brand name Viva. As a result, the FDA issued a warning in May to retailers, restaurants and food service operations to check their stock and remove any cantaloupe with this brand.
The Blind Melon super hit, "No Rain," appears in a wholly different form. According to the liner notes, this version of the song was used to lead into the album version for live shows. Filled with feedback and slurred speech, it is definitely not hit material.

We have established a regeneration protocol for melon (Cucumis melo L.), using cotyledons as explants, in which the overall regeneration frequency reached more than 90 percent, and combined this protocol with Agrobacterium tumefaciens transformation to produce transgenic melon plants.
