WESLACO Vine decline has impacted South Texas melon crops for years. This disease strikes late in the growing season, at a time when most farmers are contemplating harvest. But just as the cantaloupes begin to ripen, plants and profits wither and die.
NOAA Fisheries Service released the final report today on the mysterious stranding event of melon-headed whales off the coast of Hawaii in July 2004. Although the exact cause of the stranding is unknown, scientists concluded that navy sonar exercises may have played a role in the stranding.
First, some selection hints: Ripe cantaloupes have a sweet, musky aroma. Watch out for any with an overly strong odor -- they could be overripe. Avoid melons with soft spots, bruises or punctures. Dont worry if theres a bleached side where the melon rested on the ground.
Transplants were set early part of May and early harvest was late July to early August. Total yield to first week of September. Soil type = fine, sandy loam; well drained.
Consisting of exquisitely crafted drinking vessels and a plethora of clasps and buttons, the discovery is the most extensive of its kind ever found on Czech soil. Among the items found were silver melon bead ornaments that were originally sewn onto vestments as decoration.
Stir in the syrup and lemon juice. Taste carefully. If the melon is not fully ripe, you may want to add a little more syrup. Cover and freeze the fruit puree in ice cube trays [we needed 2.5 trays worth]. When frozen, place several cubes at a time into a food processor and puree until smooth.
Transfer melon to a food processor or blender then add honey, lime juice and cardamom. Blend until smooth. Pour melon mixture into a bowl, cover and chill in fridge until cold.
