A piece of a fruit that is believed to be a family of melon excavated from the Shimonosato Ruin in Moriyama in Shiga prefecture, or state, central Japan, Thursday, May 31.
What is it? Bitter Melon is an herbal medicine used to treat diabetes, cancer, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, stomach problems, and to increase appetite (appetite stimulant).
There are about 120 genera and 735 species of Cucurbitaceae worldwide, with 18 genera and 76 species native to southern Africa. Some well known vegetables fall in this family such as Watermelon, Hubbard Squash, Butternut, Pumpkin, sweet melons and Cucumber.
Transplants were set early part of May and early harvest was late July to early August. Total yield to first week of September. Soil type = fine, sandy loam; well drained.
Adults: This is a small aphid, smaller than most other aphids. The winged adults are about 1.25 millimeters long, soft bodied, and yellow to dark green with a black head and thorax. The wings are held rooflike over the abdomen at rest. Wingless adults tend to be 1.0 to 1.

The plant has long been used as a diabetes treatment. Juice from the leaves and fruit has anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic properties, and the leaves, fruit and seeds all contain chemicals which can induce abortion.
