Muscatine Melon: A Case Study of a Place-based Food in Iowa.
WESLACO Vine decline has impacted South Texas melon crops for years. This disease strikes late in the growing season, at a time when most farmers are contemplating harvest. But just as the cantaloupes begin to ripen, plants and profits wither and die.
Taste and season with more lemon or lime juice, sugar if needed. Add salt and pepper, if desired. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes. Serve with grilled or broiled fish or chicken.
Cantaloupes are the most widely grown type of muskmelon, which see. They are produced on long-running annual plants, or non-climbing "vines" that are prostrate on the soil. On healthy plants there is a canopy of large, soft-hairy leaves, generally heart shaped and somewhat lobed.
