The grape has a long history of medicinal uses. Ancient Egyptians treated asthma with grapes. More recently, sap from grape branches was used to treat skin irritations and scrapes. Modern medicine may have discovered measurable benefits from compounds in both grape seeds and red wines.
Wild grape is also known as muscadine, scuppernong, and southern fox grape, and is valued for its edible, tasty fruit. Wild grape grows from Texas to south Florida, north to Delaware, and west to Missouri.
The grape has a long and complex history, dating back to its wild Near Eastern progenitor V. sylvestris. They were probably domesticated by 4000 B.C. Along with domestication came a single mutation-induced transition from dioecy to perfect flowers.
Properly matching the variety to the climate of the vineyard site is necessary for consistent production of high quality grapes. Grape varieties fall into one of three groups: American, French-American hybrids, and European.
The Concord Grape (Blue-Purple), 'Vitis labrusca 'Concord' , is most famous for being the "grape juice" grape. The Concord Grape is also great for jams and jellies.
