Grape breeding started at the University in 1908, with the goal of creating cold-hardy table and juice grapes using traditional breeding methods. In the 1980's, the Grape Breeding Project responded to the needs of local commercial growers and wineries, and began to focus on wine grape production.

The grape leaffolder is a common and widely distributed species that is a minor pest of grapes in the United States. In California severe outbreaks have occurred in restricted areas during some years. These outbreaks have been associated with failures of parasites to attain their normal levels.
