Downy mildew, caused by the fungus Plasmopara viticola, is probably the most serious disease of unsprayed grape foliage in the Midwest. The disease occurs worldwide wherever the weather during the growing season is humid and rainy, and temperatures are cool to moderate.
A deciduous vine to 30 ft. that, without support, makes a nice ground cover. Stems have shreddy bark and the white-fuzzy leaves are roundish and lobed. Fragrant, greenish-yellow flowers are followed by clusters of small, edible, black grapes.
Gall formation is the typical symptom of this disease. Galls may be produced on canes, trunks, roots, and cordons and may grow to several inches in diameter. Internally galls are soft and have the appearance of disorganized tissue.
Crown gall is a common, devastating grape disease that has been known to result in losses of entire vineyards in Kentucky. Besides grapes, over 600 types of plants are known to be susceptible to crown gall, including apples, stone fruits and brambles.
