There are several species of Wild Grape in Virginia, most of which are very similar and difficult to tell apart. Fox Grape (Vitis labrusca), Summer Grape (Vitis aestivalis), and Riverbank Grape (Vitis riparia) are probably the most common species.
The muscadine grape (Vitis rotundifolia) is a native grape species found in the southeastern United States. It grows wild throughout North Carolina and will survive in areas where other grape species will not. The fruit is generally harvested as single berries rather than in bunches.
But it took me some time to realize that. When I moved here from the East Coast in 1982, the words "Colorado" and "wine" seldom appeared in the same sentence. This was Gods country and ski country. It certainly wasnt wine country.
