GRAPE POWDERY MILDEW IS A THREAT EVEN IN A DRY YEAR By John Hartman, Plant Pathology Although drought and absence of rainy weather has slowed the development of many grape diseases in Kentucky this year, powdery mildew is not slowed by lack of rain.
The grape has a long and complex history, dating back to its wild Near Eastern progenitor V. sylvestris. They were probably domesticated by 4000 B.C. Along with domestication came a single mutation-induced transition from dioecy to perfect flowers.
Grapes are widely grown in home gardens for fruit and landscape purposes or commercially for wine, raisins, or fresh consumption. Grapes, on a commercial scale, are the world's most widely grown deciduous fruit crop.
Crown gall is an important disease of wine grapes when they are grown in cold climates. Gall formation on the aerial part of the vines is the most common symptom associated with this disease. The bacterium which causes crown gall may be present in plants that do not show any symptoms.
