Phylum Annelida Introduction Annelids (segmented worms) are extremely successful and have invaded terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats. They include familiar forms such as earthworms and leeches and many diverse marine organisms.
These are the most highly developed helminths, having segmented bodies, a circulatory system, nephridia (part of a primitive excretory system, but still much more advanced than the flame cells of, for example, the Platyhelminthes), a highly developed digestive system, and a primitive brain.
The phylum Annelida, segmented worms, is characterized by the possession of a coelom (body cavity), setae (moving bristles), and a body divided into segments by transverse rings.
Segmented worms - metameric organization (one compartment after another somites segments organized about the same). Annelids are very complex animals. First animal with a true coelom which runs the entire length of the body. Triploblastic; bilateral symmetry.
