Effect of calcareous road dust on land snails (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) and millipedes (Diplopoda) in acid forest soils...
The authors investigated the eyes of adult Phryssonotus platycephalus (Synxenidae) and Polyxenus lagurus (Polyxenidae) by light and electron microscopy.
The fauna, which has no fewer than 103 species, 39 genera, 17 families, and five orders, is reviewed and summarised. A historical account, a review of the morphology and ecology of the millipedes in the region, and zoogeographical notes are provided.
Millipedes are terrestrial uniramian antennate and mandibulate arthropods whose bodies are made up of a chain of numerous segments. The appendages of the first body segment just behing the head (collum) are absent.
