Among the over 500 species of Passiflora, the passion fruit (Passiflora edulis, Passifloraceae) is commercially grown for its fruit or juice throughout the tropics and warmer subtropics. Most widely cultivated species are the subtropical types with purple fruits and the tropical yellow passion fruits. While the climbing plants are perennial, all fruits have a non-edible, hard skin and a juicy interior with abundant seeds.
