Pear

Top > Horticulture > Fruits > Pear

Among the more than 30 primary species of pears (Pyrus, Rosaceae), the European pear (Pyrus communis) and the Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) are the most widely cultivated. The European pear with its typical pear-shaped, buttery textured fruits has greater demands for low temperature during winter compared with the less cold-hardy Asian pear which is round shaped with crisp, grainy texture suitable for cooking. European pears are usually propagated asexually by grafting, either on pear stock or on rootstocks of quince (Cydonia oblonga. We provide information about the numerous aspects of production of pears including cultivation, pests and diseases, harvest, postharvest and storage.
