As a night-shade, the eggplant (Solanum melongena, Solanaceae) is closely related to the tomato and potato and is native to southern India and Sri Lanka. The diameter of the fleshy fruit, which is usually cooked but sometimes consumed raw, ranges from a few cm in diameter on wild plants, but much larger size in cultivated forms. The same variation is true for its color (white to yellow, green and brownish-purple) and shape (round to elongated ovoid). We provide information about the numerous aspects of production of eggplant including cultivation, pests and diseases, harvest, postharvest and storage.
