Ecdysteroid xylosides from Limnanthes douglasii

Ecdysteroid xylosides from Limnanthes douglasiihttp://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0031-9422(96)00591-2Bioassay/RIA-guided phytochemical examination of seeds of members of the genus Limnanthes demonstrates the presence of moderate to high levels of phytoecdysteroids. Limnanthes douglasii has afforded two novel ecdysteroid glycosides: limnantheoside A [20-hydroxyecdysone-3-beta-D-xylopyranoside] and limnantheoside B [ponasterone A-3-beta-D-xylopyranoside], together with 20-hydroxyecdysone and ponasterone A. HPLC/RIA data support the additional presence of small amounts of ecdysone and an analogous ecdysone glycoside. The levels of ecdysteroids in individual seeds and plants of L. douglasii are very variable. The HPLC behaviour of ecdysteroid glycosides, including these two new xylosides, in both RP- and NP-systems using different mobile phases is also discussed.

Ecdysteroid: Ecdysteroids are insect moulting hormones which include ecdysone and its homologues such as 20-hydroxyecdysone. Ecdysteroids act as moulting hormones of arthropods but also occur in other invertebrates where they can play different role.

Limnanthes vinculans: Limnanthes vinculans, or Sebastopol meadowfoam, is an endangered species of meadowfoam found only in the Laguna de Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, California, USA and an area slightly to the south in the Americano Creek and Washoe Creek watersheds. The name vinculansEtymology for the expression vinculans derives from the Latin root vinculum, meaning "a bond, a cord.

Spiraea douglasii: Spiraea douglasii, commonly known as hardhack, is a shrub of the Spiraea family. It is found in northwestern United States, Canada, and southern Alaska, east to Alberta and Idaho.
