Another relative of the cabbage, this vegetable is a cool-weather crop that does best planted midsummer for early fall ripening. -Planting: Plant the seedlings 18-25 inches from each other in rows about 30 inches apart. Cutworm collars like the ones used with broccoli are recommended.

I am not a master gardener and I have only grown Brussels sprouts once and that was near Seattle, Washington. The experience was an interesting one for me, so I almost hate to spoil it for you.

The key to cooking Brussels sprouts is in not overcooking them. The leaves cook faster than the core, so cut an X in the bottom of the stem for even cooking when cooking the sprouts whole.

Brussels Sprouts are one of the more unusual of the brassica family. Unlike the cabbage or broccoli with one central large bud or blossom, the Brussels Sprout grows on a stalk. This stalk can grow to up to three feet in height. The edible parts of the plant are clusters of swollen buds or sprouts.

CAULIFLOWER This cool-season vegetable is a close relative of cabbage. However, cauliflower takes longer to develop and is not as cold hardy as cabbage and broccoli. Therefore, cauliflower often is considered more difficult to grow. It is also fairly intolerant of summer heat and drought.
